Navigating Trauma Recovery With EMDR

EMDR was originally created to treat post-traumatic stress disorder in people who had suffered severe trauma, such as veterans and abuse survivors. Now, however, it’s commonly used to help people stuck in cycles of anxiety, depression, and more. It can be a tool of healing and change for almost anyone who wants to break out of unwanted patterns, beliefs, and cycles.

Anything that causes you to feel unsafe or unable to care for yourself is considered traumatic. Trauma can be small repeated situations or events that add up over time, or it can be a singular event.

Trauma creates physical changes in the body and the structure of the brain. Traumatic experiences cause your brain to be wired to perceive danger all around you. Your body jumps into survival mode in order to protect you and keep you safe from perceived threats.

Luckily, your body is incredibly adaptive.

Just like your brain was wired to perceive danger through trauma, it can become wired to get back to a safe baseline again.

In other words, you can soothe your body’s reactions and calm down your nervous system. That’s exactly what EMDR was designed for.

How Does EMDR Therapy for Trauma Work?

EMDR therapy provides a safe, supportive environment to heal negative, unpleasant, and unwanted emotions and memories.

EMDR works by rewiring how you think and react to something that felt unsafe in your past. It allows you to process events and emotions in a safer way while developing more helpful core beliefs about yourself and the world around you.

When you come into an EMDR session, we’ll work together to help you:

  • Desensitize strong negative feelings

  • Deescalate old wounds and subconscious beliefs

  • Process negative feelings and deal with subconscious feelings or behaviors that come up

  • Soothe future anxieties or scenarios

  • Change the way memory is stored in the brain to reduce problematic symptoms and behaviors

  • Introduce internal validation to change patterns of self-abuse and negative thoughts you have about yourself

As your EMDR therapist, it’s my job to help you feel safe and grounded before, during, and after sessions in order to help you feel safe and nurtured.

EMDR for Veterans in New York

If you’re a veteran in New York, you face unique challenges. You’ve been through unimaginable experiences. Reintegrating into society and back into civilian life can be difficult and painful. Once your life slows down, trauma and old experiences often come back in strong, scary, and unexpected ways.

You won’t have to talk about your feelings for hours on end, reliving all the hardest parts of your past. Instead, EMDR helps you desensitize frightening flashbacks or distressing emotions, reprocess traumatic events into stored memory, and calms down your nervous system so you can feel safe.

When you work with me, I’ll create a safe space for you to feel seen, heard, celebrated, and nurtured.

I’ll meet you wherever you’re at to help you feel stable in your body and life. I’ll support you through difficult situations, emotions, and experiences. And together, we’ll create lasting change so you can heal and flourish.

What a typical EMDR session looks like

There are 8-10 total EMDR sessions, depending on your needs and desires. These can be combined with psychotherapy or on their own.

The first 1-2 sessions are used to gain knowledge, background, and history.

You’ll get a full hour to find calm, settle in, and work through EMDR: Butterfly touching or tapping, eye movements, or auditory stimulation, with your eyes open or closed, depending on your comfort and preference. At the end of each session, we take 5-10 minutes to check in, debrief, and help you emotionally regulate and prepare for the rest of your day.
